Healthcare Assistant Role Description

As a Healthcare Assistant (HCA) in Birmingham, you will be an integral part of the patient care team, providing essential support to nurses and other medical professionals in a variety of settings. This role is perfect for compassionate individuals seeking a rewarding career in the healthcare sector with the flexibility and variety that agency work through labourer.agency provides.

Our clients range from large NHS trusts and private hospitals to smaller care homes and community support services across the Birmingham region. Whether you're looking for an immediate start to gain experience, or a long-term position to build your career, we have opportunities that match your availability and aspirations. Similar to how we connect skilled labourers for CSCS Labourer jobs in Birmingham, we specialise in quickly matching the right healthcare talent with the right placement.

This role demands resilience, empathy, and a strong work ethic. You'll be making a tangible difference in people's lives every day, while benefiting from the security and support of a leading local recruitment agency. For those also exploring opportunities in other regions, we facilitate roles nationwide, much like our services for a Refuse / Waste Operative in Durham, DH1 or a Chef in Wakefield, WF1.

Key Responsibilities & Daily Duties

  • 1 Direct Patient Care: Assist patients with personal care needs, including washing, dressing, toileting, and feeding, while always maintaining dignity and respect.
  • 2 Clinical Support: Take and record vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration), collect specimens, and prepare patients for clinical procedures or examinations.
  • 3 Mobility & Safety: Safely assist patients with mobility, using appropriate equipment like hoists or wheelchairs, and help maintain a clean, safe, and infection-controlled environment.
  • 4 Communication & Reporting: Act as a key communicator between patients, families, and the nursing team. Accurately document care provided and report any concerns promptly.
  • 5 Emotional Support: Provide companionship, reassurance, and emotional support to patients, often during stressful or vulnerable times in their lives.

Essential Requirements & Skills

  • A Compassion & Integrity: A genuine desire to care for others with patience, empathy, and a non-judgmental attitude. This is the foundation of all healthcare roles in Birmingham.
  • B Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written English skills to interact effectively with patients, families, and a multidisciplinary team.
  • C Reliability & Flexibility: A commitment to punctuality and the ability to work various shifts, including days, nights, weekends, and bank holidays, as required by our clients.
  • D Basic Clinical Knowledge (Preferred): While full training is often provided, previous experience in care or relevant qualifications (e.g., NVQ Level 2/3 in Health & Social Care) are highly advantageous.
  • E Right to Work: Must have the legal right to work in the UK. All necessary compliance checks, including an enhanced DBS, will be facilitated by labourer.agency.
