This job advertisement is for a genuine temporary Joiner vacancy in Birmingham Airport B26. All applicants are considered fairly.
Project Spotlight: The Birmingham Airport B26 Development
This isn't just another construction site. The Birmingham Airport (B26) project represents a significant £multi-million investment into the West Midlands' infrastructure. As the Joiner on this assignment, you'll be contributing to a high-profile development that serves millions of passengers annually and is a critical economic hub for the region.
The specific scope involves the comprehensive refurbishment of several retail units and passenger lounges within Terminal 1. This requires a level of precision and finish that exceeds standard commercial builds, as all work must be completed to aviation-grade standards, with materials and methods approved by airport authorities. The environment is dynamic, often requiring work to be scheduled around flight operations, demanding flexibility and a proactive mindset.
Why This Project Stands Out:
- Technical Challenge: Working within strict airside security protocols and noise/dust containment regulations.
- Career Portfolio: Adding a major transport infrastructure project to your CV significantly enhances future employability.
- Network Building: Collaborating with a top-tier main contractor opens doors to future projects across the UK.
Tools, Materials & On-Site Logistics
Expected Kit & Material Specifications
To excel in this role, familiarity with the following is highly advantageous:
- Primary Materials: High-grade MDF & MR MDF, hardwood veneers, solid oak for feature pieces, and fire-rated board where specified.
- Specialist Fixings: Extensive use of concealed fixings, soft-close mechanisms for cabinetry, and aviation-approved adhesives.
- Machinery On-Site: Access to a fully equipped on-site workshop with panel saws, edge banders, and dowelling machines. You will be expected to operate these safely and efficiently.
- Personal Tool Expectation: Your own reliable cordless drill/driver set, impact driver, saws (circular/hand), levels, and full measuring & marking kit.
The client provides all major workshop machinery and bulk materials. A detailed tool list will be confirmed upon registration.
Site Access & Daily Logistics
Working at a live airport involves unique logistical considerations:
- Security Induction: Mandatory, half-day airport-specific induction before any site access is granted. This covers security passes, restricted zones, and emergency procedures.
- Parking & Transport: Dedicated contractor parking is provided off-site, with a shuttle bus to the terminal. Allow extra time for this process.
- Material Delivery: All material deliveries are tightly scheduled for specific time windows. The Joiner will coordinate with the site foreman to ensure timely availability.
- Work Scheduling: Some high-noise tasks may be restricted to off-peak flight hours (e.g., early mornings or late evenings). Flexibility is appreciated.
Pro Tip: Successful candidates often have experience in other secured environments like MOD sites, data centres, or pharmaceutical labs, as they understand the discipline required.
